Amélie Nothomb could be on the verge of leaving Albin Michel for Gallimard, although no official confirmation has been given. The Belgian-born novelist published her first book, Hygiène de l’assassin, with Albin Michel in 1992 and has remained with the publishing house ever since.
Nothomb releases a new novel every year at the start of the literary season, with her books selling an average of between 150,000 and 200,000 copies. Her latest title, L’Adolescence du perroquet, is 160 pages long and priced at €18.90. It topped sales rankings during the week of its release on August 19.
The possible move is linked to Florence Godfernaux, a former head of press relations at Albin Michel who could become Nothomb’s editor at Gallimard. Godfernaux was dismissed by Albin Michel following allegations involving psychological harassment, a hostile sexual environment and a breach of loyalty toward the company, according to the information provided.
Nothomb holds an unusually prominent position at Albin Michel. She is reportedly the only author at the publishing house with her own office, where she comes each morning to answer letters from readers.
Francis Esménard, the 89-year-old grandson of Albin Michel and president of the Huyghens de Participations holding company that controls the group, said he had heard the rumors but had recently seen Nothomb and was due to have lunch with her on November 9. Nothomb did not respond to requests for comment.
