Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers on Sunday, choosing him over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in the race for a U.S. Senate seat from Michigan.
Stevens had lost the Democratic nomination to El-Sayed earlier this year. Her endorsement followed several days of growing tension with El-Sayed and his campaign over an advertisement produced by a political action committee.
In a video statement posted on X, Stevens said El-Sayed had told her she was no longer welcome in his campaign and should stay away. She said that, as a result, she was endorsing Rogers.
Stevens also said she did not support political commentator Hasan Piker, who has campaigned with El-Sayed. Piker is described in the original report as a controversial commentator.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Detroit while standing alongside Rogers, Stevens said she was sorry that people were upset and understood their reaction. She had attended church with Rogers on Sunday morning.
Rogers and El-Sayed are competing for the seat that will become vacant after Democratic Sen. Gary Peters decided not to seek re-election.
