Democrats’ gains in the 2026 midterm elections had reached seven Senate seats, at least 24 House districts, five governorships and 12 state legislative chambers by Wednesday afternoon, according to the results reported in the source account. Republicans had yet to flip a Democratic-held congressional seat, governorship or legislative chamber, based on Associated Press data.

The Associated Press had not called nine House races, two Senate contests and two governor’s races as of late Wednesday. The remaining Republican opportunities to gain House seats were largely limited to two newly redrawn districts. Mary Radcliffe, head of research at FiftyPlusOne, said Maine’s 2nd District was the only potential Republican pickup among the unredistricted seats.

The results included major Senate gains in states where Republicans had held seats. Kansas elected its first Democratic U.S. senator since 1932, while Democrats also captured Senate seats in Texas, Iowa, South Carolina, Ohio, Maine and North Carolina. In Texas, Democrats also defeated three-term Republican Gov. Greg Abbott.

Democrats won governorships in Georgia, Iowa, Ohio and Nevada, states carried by President Donald Trump in 2024. The results gave Democrats a majority of the nation’s governorships for the first time since 2010.

State legislatures also shifted. Democrats took control of the Texas House for the first time in more than two decades, flipped both chambers in Wisconsin and won the North Carolina House after 16 years in the minority. In Pennsylvania, they captured the state Senate, giving the party full control of state government. Democrats also regained lower chambers in Michigan and Minnesota, while unofficial Arizona results pointed to the party winning both legislative chambers for the first time in roughly 60 years.

In Florida, Indiana, Kansas and Missouri, Republicans retained legislative majorities but lost veto-proof supermajorities. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee said the scale of the statehouse losses was unmatched for Republicans since the aftermath of Watergate in 1974.

Republicans had pursued mid-decade congressional redistricting in Texas, Florida and North Carolina in an effort to protect their advantage. The source account said the changes did little to blunt the Democratic gains. Senate contests in Alaska and Mississippi and several House races were still unresolved Wednesday.
