Germany’s Military shipbuilding sector is entering a period of renewed ambition, driven by a strategic shift toward rebuilding and strengthening the country’s navy. The change has helped propel TKMS and Rheinmetall as two national champions in the construction of warships, with both companies pursuing opportunities abroad.

The revival is particularly visible in Kiel, in northern Germany. The city’s sheltered bay, the Förde, extends 17 kilometres inland before opening onto the Baltic Sea. Connected to the North Sea by a canal, the natural harbour helped support the development of military shipyards during the second half of the 19th century.

Kiel, which has 248,000 inhabitants, has a strong maritime character shaped by its brick buildings and naval heritage. Although its shipyards had long been in decline, the city is now experiencing a historic revival as international demand for military vessels expands.
