Brazilian cryptocurrency exchange Mercado Bitcoin says it has blocked about $11 million in crypto assets after a hacker attack early Monday. The company estimates that around $38 million was involved in the incident.
The exchange said it has identified additional assets that may be blocked and is continuing its recovery efforts. It also told Folha that customers would not lose assets as a result of the attack.
Mercado Bitcoin said it activated its governance protocols after detecting the incident, notified the relevant authorities and temporarily took its platform offline until it can resume operations safely. The company said it will provide an update on when services will return through its official channels.
The exchange urged customers to watch out for scams, saying it never asks for passwords, verification codes or recovery phrases, and does not offer refunds through links, WhatsApp or phone calls. It said official information is available through its app, website and verified Instagram and X profiles.
