Oil prices closed sharply lower in New York after Democrats won the Midterm elections. The result fueled expectations of renewed momentum toward ending the US war with Iran.

West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, fell 8.26% to $88.15 a barrel. Brent crude, the international benchmark, dropped 8.59% to $94.70.
