Sen. Chris Murphy remained hospitalized Tuesday after suffering a stroke over the weekend, his office confirmed. Communications director Josh Sorbe said Murphy was continuing to improve and was encouraged by the messages of support he had received.
Murphy experienced symptoms Saturday while attending his son’s hockey game, chief of staff Allison Herwitt said. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a stroke, and was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for monitoring. Herwitt said Sunday that he was awake, alert and responding well to treatment.
The senator’s office did not provide additional information about his condition or expected recovery. Sorbe said Murphy had voted early in Connecticut and urged people to vote in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
The Senate is scheduled to return to session Monday. Murphy is not up for reelection Tuesday; he entered the Senate in 2013 after serving six years in the House and has traveled extensively this fall in support of Democratic candidates.
