Wall Street opened sharply higher after Democrats won the midterm elections. The Dow Jones gained 1.95% to 52,803.24 points, the Nasdaq rose 1.31% to 25,687.35 and the S&P 500 advanced 1.16% to 7,656.46.

Tesla and SpaceX moved in the opposite direction. Tesla fell 4.13% and SpaceX lost 2.70%, amid concerns that the victorious Democrats could scrutinize the companies, according to the report.

European markets were also on course for their strongest gains since June, with the opening rally on Wall Street adding to the momentum. London rose 1.86%, Paris 2.2%, Frankfurt 2.13%, Madrid 3.2% and Milan 2.44%.

Banking stocks recorded their best performance since May, helped by falling bond yields. A basket of European luxury shares selected by Goldman Sachs was also heading for its strongest day since July. Renewable-energy stocks outperformed, as investors viewed the Democratic victory as a positive signal for clean-energy companies: wind farm operator Orsted rose 4.7%, while Vestas Wind Systems gained 3.1%.

Defense stocks lagged as investors scaled back expectations for European military spending. Leonardo fell 0.5%, Fincantieri declined 0.79% and BAE Systems lost 1.7%.
