Italy recorded 589 reported fatal injuries at work in the first nine months of 2026, excluding students, according to figures from the national workplace accident insurer Inail. That was 19 more than the 570 claims registered over the same period in 2025. By the end of August, the total had stood at 498.
Inail received 91 fatal workplace injury claims in September, averaging more than three a day. The rate rose from 2.36 reported deaths per 100,000 workers in 2025 to 2.42 in 2026, an increase of 2.5%.
Construction recorded 101 deaths, up from 99 a year earlier, while transport and storage rose from 71 to 80. Increases were also reported in business support services, accommodation and food services, health and social care, and public administration. Manufacturing fell from 83 to 73 deaths, and retail and wholesale trade from 54 to 42.
Regionally, reported deaths declined in southern Italy, from 139 to 135, and in the northeast, from 128 to 124. They increased in the northwest, from 139 to 155; central Italy, from 104 to 106; and the islands, from 60 to 69. Among individual regions, the largest increases were in Lombardy, up 12, and Sicily, up 10. Abruzzo and Umbria each recorded six fewer deaths, while Puglia recorded four fewer.
