Louis Vuitton has been approved to fund the redevelopment of streets Bassano and Galilée in Paris’s 8th arrondissement, next to the site of its planned megastore at 103 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. The company, part of LVMH, will cover the cost in full.
The proposal drew heated discussion at a meeting of the Paris Council. Eight councillors raised questions about the arrangement, including concerns from Communist members that the luxury house could gain influence over the area around its premises. Green councillors questioned whether the project would primarily serve residents or the company, while centre-right representatives asked what rules should govern private funding for public space.
Thomas Chevandier, the deputy mayor responsible for public space, said the city would retain oversight at every stage. Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire defended accepting private contributions, arguing that businesses able to help should do so, particularly where public funding might otherwise be unavailable.
Socialist councillors and some Communists voted in favour. The right also supported the measure, though with reservations, and the proposal was adopted. The debate reflects broader questions raised in Paris as private companies take a growing role in projects affecting public areas.
